below the invert level. The whole dock is supported on piles.
Consolidation and shear tests on un- disturbed soil samples taken from bore holes near the ramps to the fly- over were carried out in the PWD Laboratory to supplement the infor- mation derived from percussion bor- ing.
Design
Consideration was given to various types of bridge construction and a re- inforced concrete box girder type was finally adopted, mainly due to the fol lowing advantages:—
(a) Box girder structures are pleasing to the eye because of their continuous flowing lines and the smooth appearance of the solid soffit. They give a cleaner effect than con- ventional slab and girder design: visi- ble girders being eliminated.
(b) There is a favourable ratio of depth to span which, apart from giv- ing a slender appearance, can provide maximum headroom. This is of par- ticular importance in flyover and ramp
structures.
(c) The ratio of dead load to span is favourable for reinforced concrete construction.
(d) Structurally the box girder

(e) Due to the high moment of inertia of box girders, deck deflection is minimized and top and bottom slabs are effective in distributing live load between adjoining girders.
(f) For a medium span structure of 70 ft. as used in this particular case. the box girder provides a very flexible and adaptable means of con- struction.
