General Planning
Physically the plan reflects the philosophy of the education pro- gramme with its relative emphasis on leaching, research and patient care on an integrated basis. As the pro- gramme encompasses much more than undergraduate teaching, facilities are provided for post-graduate medical education and training in fields related to medicine such as nursing and la- boratory technology.
Hence the centre is a single struc- tural and functional building in the broad disciplines of medicine. Other
basic principles were also accepted: modular development of the research laboratories to ensure a lasting degree of flexibility whatever use the accom- modation is put to, communal facili- ties such as medical illustration. library and museum to serve the faculty department and the hospital as a whole.
The general density of building in- creases from both the north and south to the centre at which is located the dominating element of the complex
the hospital tower block rising 15 floors and almost 200 ft. above ground level, with, surrounding it at the base on two and three levels, the "technical areas" or podium. The hospital tower block is in the shape of a tee.
In the bar of the tee are 20 wards on 10 floors, two on each floor divid- ed in the centre by the stem of the tee which contains the lifts and the teaching accommodation.
The top floor of this block has liv- ing-in accommodation for house doctors, while the lowest floor directly above the podium contains the clinical diagnostic laboratory which is connected by a corridor northwards to the adjoining department of pathology and library. This corridor also serves a block of research la- boratories for the clinical department and an auditorium to be used for

The various technical facilities of the hospital are concentrated in the podium block and are closely related. The operating theatres, the accident and emergency department, and the department of radiology are sited on the top floor of this block. The mid- dle floor contains the out-patient and blood donors department. the phar- macy, central sterile supply depart- ment, and the cafeteria. On the bot- tom floor are the administration and medical records departments together with the main concourse and lift hall.
From the podium block direct links are provided northwards to the faculty, eastwards to the technical services building containing kitchen, laundry, boiler house and generator station, and southwards to the second phase of the hospital, which will con- sist of the rehabilitation department. paediatric and maternity blocks. All the basic hospital services are concentrated in the central services building east of the main block but connected to it by a two-level tunnel. the upper level being for trucking and staff while the lower houses services.
Nurses' Quarters and Training School
On a hill beyond the services build- ing to the east, but linked to it by a bridge, are situated the nurses quar- ters which will eventually house 500 staff and are designed as a series of courtyards with the training school as the central element.
These form one building group in which the teaching facilities are ar- chitecturally integrated with the accommodation but physically separ- ated from it by means of courtyards screens and planting. The buildings are so sited as to hug the crest of the
