START ON MEMORIAL

CONSTRUCTION work has just started on the site for an imposing memorial to the thousands of civilian victims of the Japanese occupation of Singapore.

Swan and McLaren, the architects, won a design competition for the project. The building contractors are Lim Chin Yok and Co.

STATUE SQUARE OPENED

THE new Statue Square, an oasis of greenery, shelters paved walks, and playing fountains in the heart of Hong Kong's commercial district, was opened last month.

There are three major fountains. One is located on the northern side of Chater Road while the other two are in the portion south of the road.

These two are fountain walls of very different basic design. One has jets shooting against its strongly un- dulating wall surface while the other has quiet waters run- ning the bronze and ceramic abstract mural. The murals are the work of Mr. A. Casadei.

There are also four other pools which have fine jets shooting up to form gothic arches the top of the arches catching the sun in the agitated drops of water. Colour change lights are provided at night.

HOTEL MALAYSIA

Third floor level has now been reached on the new multi-storey Hotel Malaysia being erected at the corner of Tanglin Road and Grange Road, Singapore. The ex- pected date of completion is December, 1967.

The hotel will contain 304 bed- rooms. There will be a swim- ming pool and cabana-type bed- rooms on the first floor, and other facilities will include a Chinese restaurant, curry room, coffee shop, Discotheque and bar in the basement, and a large laundry to serve the Goodwood chain of hotels.

The architect is Alfred H.K. Wong, B.Arch(Melb), SIA, ARIBA, ARAIA. The quanity surveyors are Langdon and Every (Far East), and the structural engine- ers, Gudgeon, McWilliams and Partners. Lim Kah Ngam (Singa- pore) Ltd. are the general con- tractors.

The shelters have upswept curved roofs, the under- side of which are faced with bronze glass mosiac tiles and are lit at night.

The building cost is shared by Government and the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. Mr. A. Fitch, of Szeto Wai, was the architect. The contractors were John Lok and Partners, Ltd.

PENANG LOW-COST FLATS

PENANG State Government plans to build two blocks of multi-storey low-cost flats at Nordin Street Ghaut and Ayer Itam at a cost of about M$4 million.

Piling tenders have already been invited and work will start soon on both sites. The Nordin Street Ghaut scheme will comprise a 17-storey block, providing 384 residential units, the Ayer Itam scheme will provide 480 homes in 16-storey blocks. On each site there will be a clinic, funeral parlour, shops and bicycle sheds. projects are due to be completed by mid-1967.

TAIWAN HOUSING RECORD

Housing construction in Taiwan reached a peak in 1965 when over 1,000,000 sq. ft. of floor space was added. According to official statistics published last month, new buildings erected last year equal in floor space those built during the three previous years.

Compared with the base year of 1961, the construc- tion index in 1965 was 532.6 per cent. In 1964 the index was 1542 per cent.
