cleaning and the machine has been de- signed to provide a full air output over an ambient temperature range from -0.4 to +126 deg. F. (-18 to +52 deg. C.) with its doors closed.

The Contract Air 1 has an all- welded pressed-steel channel-section

frame with semi-elliptic springs and beam axle and travels on two 5.60-13, six-ply tyres on pressed-steel wheels. The welded and bolted pressed-steel canopy is fitted with a single lockable door on each side, the doors remaining closed during running, while the in- strument panel, fitted under the canopy and visible through a window in the canopy door, incorporates a compressor oil-pressure gauge, com- pressor oil-temperature gauge, output air-pressure gauge, engine oil-pressure indicator light and stop/start controls.

A 2-in. eye-bolt coupling forms an integral part of the towing hitch which incorporates the overrun operating mechanism for the 8-in. rod-operated drum brakes fitted. A handbrake is also attached to the towing hitch.

The fuel tank holds 8 gal., and the machine's overall dimensions are 9 ft. 34 in. long including tow bar, by 3 ft. 1121⁄2 in. wide by 4 ft. 21⁄2 in.

SAFETY DEVICE

An inexpensive device which en- sures that cranes working on uneven ground can operate safely, thus re- ducing the risk of injury and accident, has been development by Wylie Safe Load Indicators, 800 Old Ford Road, London E3.

It is a simple instrument which can be fitted in the control cabin and con- sists of a precision-built spirit level which is free to rotate on a pivot, with a pendulum which controls the spirit level so that during crane operation it

automatically rotates in the direction of the lowest point of the crane car- riage. Thus, when the operator is working on blocked duties it shows if a jack is low. On crawler or free-on- wheels duties it gives warning of the degree of danger in lifting which is fre- quently present at one point of the slewing circle. The gauge face is clearly marked with varying slopes from the true level to one in 15.

VIBRATOR

Six different vibrator heads are available with the Model 600G con- crete vibrator, made by Stow Manu- facturing Co., 627 Shear Street, Bing- hampton, New York. Powered by a 6 h.p. petrol engine, the unit operates at 6,000 to 9,300 vibrations per minute to suit varying job conditions. Flexible shafts are in various length combina- tions from 3 ft. to 35 ft.

The vibrator heads have diameters of 14in., 1-5/8in., 2in. and 11⁄2in. Two others with diameters the same as the

smaller heads have four fins around smaller heads have four fins around the outside of the head; these are said to double the vibrator efficiency of the head by providing more area con- tact with the concrete.

The 600G has a 360-degree swivel mounting and may have either a pan base or an optional wheelbarrow base. It has an automatic centrifugal ball bearing clutch, an eccentric belt tight- ener and a quick disconnect coupling so that flexible shafts can be changed in seconds.

PUMP

The latest self-priming, centrifugal Rapier pump, Model 4PA, has been based on the existing Model 3PA, but will circulate up to 24,250 g.p.h. as compared with 19,700 g.ph. for the earlier version. Capable of pumping dirty water containing 25 per cent solids, it can handle a maximum total head of 80 ft.

A large air capacity gives the 4PA a quick priming response; a glandless water seal ensures that the pump re- quires no lubrication or adjustment; and power is supplied by a diesel en- gine developing 8.2 h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m. The whole assembly, mounted

on a metal trolley frame with two cushion-tyred wheels and a push handle, weighs 660 lb. and measures 3 ft. 5 in. high by 2 ft. 34 in. wide by 3 ft. 11⁄2 in. long.

If required, it can also be supplied with a petrol engine developing 8.6 h.p. at 3,000 r.p.m., or in a version having no power unit but fitted with the necessary equipment to accept any comparable power source.

The makers are NCK-Rapier Ltd., P.O. Box 1, Waterside Works, Ipswich, UK.

CONCRETE SAW

Fast cutting in tough materials is possible with the Remington Pow-R Cut saw, recently introduced by the Power Products Division of DESA In- dustries, Inc., Park Forest, Ill., USA.

Powered by a petrol engine, the saw makes clean cuts through all types of construction material, includ- ing concrete, sheet metal and plastics. It is 40 per cent. more powerful than its previous model and has a 4in. cut-

ting capacity. A triple filter system assures long engine life under critically dusty conditions. Starting is made easy by a compression release.

The saw is fitted with a safety steel guard, adjustable for all cutting posi- tions, and a cover for the hardened steel drive pulley. It weighs only 25 lb. and is made easy to handle by a low tone muffler and vibrationless cushion- comfort grips on the front and rear handles.
