DUMPER

A dumper of 25 cwt capacity is now being exported by Thwaites En- gineering Co. Ltd., Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, UK.

Known as the Swivel Skip, the dumper can transport up to 22 cu.ft. of concrete and accurately tip the load from a height (lid edge of skip to ground) of 3ft. 6in. at any of several points throughout a 180 degree arc forward of the driver.

The skip, which is fully counter- balanced to achieve stability at either side and in front, is 22in. wide at the lip, and is mounted on a slewing ring containing sealed ball bearings. Slew- ing the skip, locking it in position and tipping (hydraulic) are all performed from the driving seat. The machine has an overall width of 5ft. 7in. and a turning circle of 18 ft.

Thwaites have also introduced a new 3-ton Alldrive dumper. The power unit is a Petter three-cylinder air-

cooled diesel engine which provides a top speed of 12 mph. The makers claim that when fully loaded the All- drive will go through deep mud up to the base of the skip without wheel spin. The turning circle is 16 ft.

PUMP

A lin. single-acting hand pump, Model SD45, from Patay Pumps Ltd., Ridgeway, Iver, Bucks., UK, has a high capacity for its size, delivering at a rate of 6 to 7 g.p.m. and able to work com- fortably against a 15ft. head.

It can handle water, fuel oils and petrol, and is said to be sufficiently

strong for industrial applications or for use by contractors when on the side of a tractor. Its diaphragm has been de- signed to present a minimum amount of mechanical resistance, making the

pump particularly easy to operate; its aluminium-alloy housing comes in a nylon-coated version for applications requiring a good chemical resistance, and two built-in handwheels enable the user to remove the front cover.

Measuring 9in. high by 84in. wide by 4-5/8in. deep, the pump weighs 41⁄2lb., including its 1ft. long stainless- steel handle. An independant mount- ing bracket allows the pump to be fastened down in any position.

ROAD HEATER

A new infra-red road-heater design- ed to soften but not to burn asphalt road surfaces has been developed by

Millars' Machinery Co. Ltd., Bishop's Stortford, Herts., UK.

Whereas traditional radiant road- heaters burn off an asphalt surface ready for complete re-laying, the new Millars' heater can be used for mend- ing existing surfaces. After the asphalt has been softened, a road roller can be used to press down projecting clip- pings, and to join up cracks. If neces- sary, additional asphalt or pre-coated chips can be added to the softened sur- face.

The heater can also be used when it is necessary to re-lay the entire sur- face. A mechanical shovel easily re- moves the asphalt once it has been softened. Because the asphalt has not been carbonised, it can be re-used for paths and playgrounds.

The unit is supplied for mounting on a lorry or for fitting to road-planing equipment. The heating panel consists of 24 generators in four banks mount- ed on a steel section frame. A 1-ton propane storage tank gives appro- ximately 30 hr. continuous working.

COMPRESSOR

The latest portable compressor to be produced by Broom and Wade Ltd., High Wycombe, Bucks, UK., has an output of 85 c.f.m. at 100 p.s.i. and is substantially smaller and lighter than previous models of the same perfor-

mance.

Powered by a Perkins D.3152 three-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine, the ContractAir 1 incorporates a Broom Wade Whirlwind Uniflo single- stage rotary compressor unit. The speed of the engine is automatically controlled by air-receiver pressure and air demand and a single, extra-large radiator cools both the engine water and compressor oil. Water from the en- gine passes through the radiator and then circulates through the compressor oil-cooler before returning to the radiator.
