Work in progress on Canal Road flyover extension
Canal Road flyover extension
It was originally intended to let works north of Gloucester Road in one contract. However, indecision on the tunnel in 1968 and progress on other sections of Waterfront Road required that a contract be let for a revised lay- out (Fig. 5) which could bring Water- front Road into use without the tunnel and at the same time enable the plan- ners to revert back to the original lay- out should a decision on the tunnel be made..
Work on the site started in March 1969 and the contract called for the construction of Canal Road extension flyover, two single lane ramps into Gloucester Road and roadworks at ground level.
It was fortunate that only three months after the commencement of the work the decision to proceed with the tunnel was made and it was possible to introduce the original layout with. out carrying out any abortive work, Consequently the contract was amend- ed and extended by some 10 per cent with the addition of the Loop Flyover as extra works. The flyover provides a direct access to the tunnel for traffic from east of the island.
The Canal Road flyover extension, 650ft. in length, starts over Gloucester Road and provides dual two-lane carriageways to and from the tunnel and Waterfront Road. The structure is of a standard beam and slab type em- ploying prestressed beams which rest on rigid frames founded on piles. The two single-lane ramps into Gloucester Road and the Loop flyover are 18ft. wide and are cast in situ. The ramps are im- mediately above the existing seawall and are founded on preloaded spread footings.
The contract for this work was
awarded to Fook Lee Construction Co. Ltd. and is due to be completed in January 1971. The cost is estimated to be about HK$5,800,000.

These works comprise Causeway and Marsh Road flyovers, five pedes- trian footbridges and some roads at ground level. Causeway flyover is 530ft. long and will carry three-lanes of traffic travelling from Central District to North Point over the tunnel entrance. Two-lane Marsh Road flyover, measur- ing $70ft. in length, will cater for local traffic between Wan Chai and the future development of the reclamation.
Both structures are of prestressed beam and in situ slab construction supported on piled foundations.

Finishing work on Canal Road flyover
Footbridges are to be constructed using prestressed concrete or in situ box beams depending on the location. Those over roads which are in use at the time of construction will be pre- stressed.
Tenders for this part of the project were returned in May 1970 and work on the site will start during the summer. The contract period for the work is 18 months and the estimated cost is HK$5,000,000.
Main quantities
The whole of the project requires the construction of 39,000 sq. yd. of roads at ground level and 13,000 sq. yd. of elevated carriageways. To achieve this, the following approximate quanti- ties of materials are needed:
18in. x 18in. prestressed concrete piles 1,130 no.
27,000 cu. yd.
Structural concrete of various grades
-
3,400 tons - 140 tons
Mild steel reinforcement 0.5in. diameter strand 0.6in. diameter strand Asphalt Drainage pipes (various sizes) — 5,500 yd.
