The site will be developed by a central seven-storey building with 650 sq. metres of floor space per floor, surrounded by three and two- storey blocks containing a total of 40 shops, each measuring 4 x 12 metres. Underground parking will be provided beneath the main building.

Desalting plant contract

A Japanese firm, Sasakura Engineering Co. Ltd., Osaka, has been awarded the contract to sup- ply Hong Kong's first experimental desalting plant. Twelve tenders, from Japan, Britain, U.S., West Germany, France and Holland, were considered.

The plant will cost about HK$1.25 million. Delivery is expected in about 12 months. Some 50,000 gallons of water a day will be produced by the plant, which will provide basic data for a full- scale plant to be built later.

More land for sale

A further 50,000 sq. ft. of Crown land, fronting Harcourt Road between Murray Road and Cotton Tree Drive in Hong Kong Central, is being process- ed for sale and will be put up for auction later this year or early in 1971.

This was announced by Mr. J.J. Robson, direc- tor of public works, in reply to a Legislative Coun- cil question on the programme for the sale of land to meet the growing demand for office space.

Precast flatted factories

Construction work starts this month on a ten- storey precast, prestressed flatted factory at Tsuen Wan in the New Territories of Hong Kong. It will have a total floor area of 540,000 sq. ft. and is being built for Kiu Foong Enamel Factory (HK) Ltd.

The owners will occupy the ground, first and the two uppermost floors for godown and textile industry purposes, while the other floors will be sold or let to other industries such as electronics, spinning weaving and plastic enterprises.

Peter Y.S. Pun & Associates are the architects and engineers for the project. The piling contract, worth about HK$1 million, has been awarded to Gammon (HK) Ltd. and lifts will be installed by Otis.
