mistake. It is not that there is in- sufficient wattage but is due to the use of lighting fittings which give tubes of light and to the generally dark nature of the finishes.
The flooring to much of the con- course is black ribbed Pirelli rubber and most of the other flooring is dark quarry tiles, notably along the arcades. There is also a great deal of teakwood around. as rails and batten ceilings along the arcades.
The lighting level apart, finishes employed are very satisfactory. The use of steel sections for the shopfronts and for other applications gives neat details.
Compared with the restrained quality of the well-tried materials used for other applications, the hanging plastic tubular lampshades with their glittery effect over the concourse and entry area are rather out of place and give very little light.
Approaches
The simple and functional charac- ter of the car parks has already been mentioned and the vehicle approach ramps with their simple white balus- trades are also quite pleasing, rising through the building to the topmost level.
Several sets of staircases are pro- vided to and from the carparks as well as escalators, and these staircases are of an interesting and successful design. Here, with a limited area of teak used just for the handrail, one sees the quality of the material better
