as 'ground' and forms a visual transi- tion between the natural colours and textures of grass, trees, plants and water and the stone-grey finish of the modern tall buildings.
The same detailed attention has been given to the signposting of the site
within the buildings, in the open and in the underground roads and parking areas in order to provide sufficient essential information with- out creating a visually cluttered 'sign- scape'.
Detailing and finishes
The detailing and finish of the buildings in the Barbican have been carefully chosen to give an attractively uniform character to the neighbour. hood, to emphasize the structure of the buildings and to weather evenly and attractively. The main structure is of 'in situ' concrete throughout, with exposed surfaces tooled to highlight their strength and monolithic quality; most of the exposed concrete has been given a heavily pick-hammered finish, with the softer texture of bush-ham- mering where appropiate. Dark Pen Lee crushed granite aggregate has been used throughout.
