Improvement of the environment
The Singapore Government has carried out a series of campaigns to improve the environment of the Re- public and to educate the people to discard bad habits and anti-social be- haviour. In schools children have been taught the habit of cleanliness and hygiene so that they can cultivate good habits while they are young.
An extensive tree planting pro- gramme has been carried out by the Board with the target of planting 50,000 to 100,000 trees and plants per year in both new and old housing estates. It is expected that our housing estates will look cleaner and greener every year and every neighbourhood will become a congenial area for both living and working.
The ultimate objective of the Government is to achieve a property owning democracy where all the re- sidents in public housing own the flats they occupy and all the citizens feel that they are the co-owners of the new society in the Republic.
