A
Ateco Units for Michigan Tractor Shovels
Two new rippers, models HR-125 and HR-175, built especially for Michigan 125 and 175 articulated tractor-shovels, have been announced by Ateco. Oakland, California, USA. They feature a close coupled, radial- action design that concentrates full weight on the shanks for fast pene- tration in tight materials.
A wide tool beam with high ground clearance permits ripping banks and ditches with no restrictions on turn- ing in close quarters. Live-action shank brackets swivel 30 degrees to aid in working up conglomerate, frozen ground, stratified rock and similar hard materials. Swing brac- kets also promote easier better steer- ing under extreme load conditions.
The ripper tool beam accommodates up to three shanks of high strength alloy steel, with a maximum ripping depth to 18 in. Ateco equipment is distributed through Caterpillar dealers.
CRANE
Carrier and Crane Controls in Single Cab
A NEW single engine, single cab. truck-mounted hydraulic crane rated at 15 tons capacity has been introduc- ed by Grove Manufacturing Co.. Shady Grove, Pa.. USA. Designated Model TD150, it has all its crane controls in a duplex control centre within the single cab. The operator's seat can be swivelled 180 degrees and can be locked in either the forward position for driving, or the aft posi- tion for crane operation.
Powered by the carrier engine through a p.t.o.-driven hydraulic power system. The crane handles 30,000 lb. at a 12 ft. radius over the side or rear with outriggers extended.

mum of 60 ft. and telescopes back to 24 ft. for travel. Optional 17 ft. and 20 ft. stowaway jibs increase the hook height to as much as 84 ft. at 75 degrees maximum boom elevation.
Other TD150 features include: Twin double-acting hydraulic boom lift cylinders, hydraulically - driven planetary gear hoist with power up and down, and maximum 7,000 lb. line pull. 360 degree continuous rota- tion, ball bearing swing circle, and "free-drift" swing with foot brake and house lock.
The 6 x 6 and 6 x 4 carriers both have power-assisted steering. 50 m.p.h. top road speed, and full air, six-wheel brakes.

CONCRETE MIXER
Compact Machine is Easily Manoeuvred
LIGHT AND Compact, the Speedymix Mk. 2 concrete mixer can be easily moved on site and manoeuvred in nar- row spaces. The heavy-duty, welded- steel-plate mixing drum, with its rein- forced rim, has a dry capacity of 3 cu. ft. and a wet capacity of 2 cu. ft.
The machine is powered by a 3 h.p. air-cooled petrol engine via a roller chain and sprockers, fully enclosed, as are the gears and teeth of the final drive. Loading or unloading may be

done from either side, two arms being used to tilt the drum. and a spring locking mechanism to hold in the up- right, mixing or tipping position.
The frame is fabricated from pressed steel sheet, plate and r.h.s., and incor-
porates a robust parking leg and a retractable tubular drawbar; 14,00-3 tyres are fitted to the steel-disc wheels. The mixing drum is constructed of welded steel plate and is reinforced at the top.
The Mk. 2 is 4 ft. 6 in. long, minus drawbar, 4 ft. 9 in. high and 2 ft. 6 in. wide overall; it weighs ap- prox. 4 cwt.

SYNTHETIC CLOTH
Prevents Slope Surface from Sloughing
A SYNTHETIC non-woven cloth for protecting the slope-surface of em- bankments and cuttings has been de- veloped by Teijin Ltd., Tokyo, and will be marketted in the spring.
In order to prevent the slope- surface from sloughing, a sod-seeds spraying method has been used in recent years. With this method how- ever, the period for seeding is rather limited, and the surface is not com- pletely protected until the sod spreads deep roots. Although other methods, such as forming a thin film of asphalt emulsion or covering with fiber nets are considered to be effective, the costs are comparatively expensive.
To cope
with these difficulties, Teijin developed the new method, in

cooperation with Prof. S. Tanaka of Kobe University, by utilising the weather-resistant properties of Teviron polyvinyl chloride fibre. The new material is available in green mat form, 1 metre wide and 50 metres long, in which 76 mm long, 7 denier Teviron fibres are used.
In tests which took place on the Hankyu Railway embankment near Osaka this year, the mats were spread on the slope-surface and fixed with stakes. The surface, treated with the new material, withstood a heavy rain- fall of 320 mm on July 9.
