TRACTOR
Specially Designed for Work on Soft Ground
FIAT have introduced a special ver- sion of their 50C tractor designed specifically for work over soft and boggy ground.
Known as the 50C Polder, it has a ground pressure of only 2.34 p.s.i. The 50C Polder is powered by a Fiat 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, direct injec- tion diesel engine which develops 55 h.p. at the flywheel at a governed speed of 1.600 r.p.m. A dual-plate. over-centre clutch transmits power to a constant mesh gearbox which incor- porates a mechanical reduction gear to give a total range of six forward and two reverse speeds (from 1.2 m.p.h. to 6.9 m.p.h.). Steering is by means of multiple-disc clutches and contracting band brakes.
To achieve the exceptionally low ground pressure, the tractor is fitted with FL6-type track frames which carry five bottom rollers; as a result the length of track on the ground has been increased to almost 73 in. Track shoes are 271⁄2 in. wide and there is a total area of ground contact of 4,000 sq. in.
Standard equipment includes elec- tric lighting, track roller guards and an oscillating drawbar; optional extras include cab, power take-off and belt pulley.
The 50C Polder can be fitted, as illustrated, with a front-mounted Boughton V.H.10 hydraulic winch which can carry up to 385 ft. of 7 16 in. wire rope and has a maxi- mum line pull of 10,000 lb. at 60 ft. min. A pump fitted to the tractor power take-off supplies power to the winch via a control valve mounted by
the driver's seat: this valve also sup- plies power to the rear hydraulic out- lets which are fitted, when not in use. with quick-release, self-sealing coup- lings.

TANDEM ROLLER
Densities Equivalent to 14-ton Static Roller
THE new Essick Model VR-36RET vibrating tandem roller with hy- draulic trailing wheels produces den- sities equivalent to a 14-ton static roll- er. It trails on 7.50 x 16 six-ply pneu- matic tyred wheels and the whole sequence is fingertip operated.
Levers beside the operator seat pro- vide a control to position the roller for hitching, and a control to raise the unit onto the wheels. First, the guide roll end is raised by a built-in hydrau- lic jack to position the towing tongue at the level of the truck hitch. complete roller is then raised by hy- draulic cylinders to an evenly balanc- ed position on its wheels, ready for immediate highway trailing.
The
When working, the roller will clear a 9 in, curb, and the wheels and hy- draulic cylinders are easily removed for closer work or to clear obstruc- tions.
The roller is designed for asphalt breakdown and finish, cement treated, bituminous treated, and granular base materials. The VR-36RET is said to achieve specified densities in half the number of passes required by a stand- ard 4 to 6 ton static trailing roller, with its vibratory energy developing
254 lb. per lineal inch 67 times per second.
With the vibrating mechanism en- gaged, the 36 in. wide roller produces a frequency of 4,000 vibrations per minute and has an impact force of 6,000 lb. per vibration.

CRANE
Diesel Hydraulic Unit with Small Turning Circle
THE new Mobilgrue Nordest Y 1511 diesel hydraulic crane has a hydro- dynamic gear-box with torque conver- ter and built-in reversing gear. Its telescopic boom provides a 15 metre reach under the hook,
The standard basic boom is 6 m. and the telescopic boom, hydraulical- ly controlled from the driving cab. has a useful travel of 4 m. With the addition of either a 4 metre exten- sion-piece or a small retractable boom, hoists of up to 18 m. high can be at- tained.
Maximum hoist- ing capacities, with total swivelling at the minimum span of 2 m. from the swivelling axis, are 9 tons on supports, and 5.75 tons on tyres when inde- pendent. The road model (speed 50 km / hr) has a sturdy, rigid, box- ed-in girder frame- Y1511 crane
work.
Two driving axles, including a power-steered one that can be dis- engaged by dog-clutch from the driv- ing cab, ensure its total adherence on any terrain. The mechanical steering is hydraulically power assisted by separate pump. The very short wheel-base permits a complete turn in a small radius.
The four hydraulic supports are controlled from the driving cab; they are safety-locked by an automatic-
