CIVIL ENGINEERING AND PUBLIC WORKS

A FEATURE of the Kellogg Flour

Mill, situated at the junction of Lai Yip Street and Hoi Bun Street. Kwun Tong, Hong Kong has been the slipforming of eleven 150 ft. high storage silos. Using this technique. the silos were constructed in 14 days. The first stage of the flour mill, built at a cost of HK$6 millions, has a daily output of 100 tons of wheat flour. The planned total capacity can be increased up to 200 tons day.

Planning

Kellogg flour mill consists of five sections intake; silo; cleaning: mill and storage. It is also planned for future expansion to accommodate factories for producing macaroni: spaghetti, biscuits, bread, etc.

(a) Intake Section.

It was originally proposed to use a tunnel across Hoi Bun Street to the waterfront where the lighters berth alongside to load and unload, but un- fortunately there was a large drain running parallel to the seawall making this impossible. Therefore an over- head in-take system was chosen.

(b) Silo Section,

The original proposal for silos consisted of five 22-foot diameter bins plus two interspaces with storage capacity of approximately 4,500 tons of wheat. After careful considera- tion between client, architect and the consulting engineers it was decided to increase the storage capacity to 13.000 tons so that chartered ship- ment of wheat might be engaged. thereby reducing the cost of freight.

In re-planning the silo section, con- sidering the minimum area required for the cleaning, mill, and storage sections the best arrangement was found to be eleven silos of 22 ft. 2 in. diameter plus six interspaces built to the "height limit" in this area which is 170 P.D. These therefore are the tallest silos in Hong Kong. Maybe they are unique among flour mill

silos. since because of the height limit and the high cost of land in Hong Kong, the roof of silo working tower is at the same level as the roof of pent house of the silo bins and yet the floor to ceiling height of the pent house is kept to the minimum of 8 ft. An inclined conveyor was incorporated to gain back the height lost in the head of elevator. By doing this, an extra five feet in height of storage capacity of the silos and interspaces was gained.

(c) Cleaning Section.

The storage bins in the cleaning section consist of fourteen tampering bins (upper part 100 tons and lower part_110_tons): four mixing bins (300 tons): one bin for screenings to be ground (5 tons) and one bin for milled screenings (7 tons).
