HONG KONG

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AND LUTHERAN CHURCH

Toffer

HE first school on Hong Kong to an American course of study, and the first designed to be fully air-conditioned. is under con- struction on a steeply sloping site above Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.

It is sponsored by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, whose quest for permanent facilities in the Re- pulse Bay area has led to the planning of both a new church and a school, to serve about 700 pupils in both elementary and high school grades, on the same site.

The site is located near the junction of South Bay Road and Repulse Bay Road in a newly developed residen- tial area comprising a group of apart- ment towers ranging from four to eight storeys in height. A new road extending from South Bay Road to the valley forms a loop around the site and there is a drop of 80 ft. from the southern to the northern boundary of the site.

Because of the environment it was decided that the building should have a strong character to compliment the rugged terrain and should have its own identity to become the predomin- ant edifice of the area. The architects considered that strong horizontal ex- pression with a tall vertical element would be appropriate for fitting the building on to the site. A generally white finish was also envisaged.

The eight-storey school building is placed along the northern boundary,
