AIWAN has some 151 rivers, most of which are steep and swift. They usually have a low-volume flow in the dry season but swell to enorm. ous size during the typhoon season.
One such river is the Chishui which flows through the flat land of south- ern central Taiwan, draining a vast area of 410 square kilometers and flowing into the Taiwan Strait. The average annual precipitation in the
river basin amounts to 2.060 mili- meters and is concentrated in a period from July to September which ac- counts for about 56 per cent. of the total.
Because of the uneven distribution of precipitation, the heavy rainfall in flood season causes flood damage to the downstream area.
