Since the elevator operates out- doors, it has been provided with a special temperature control system. It features 'soft heating' in winter and 'spot cooling' in summer.

The observation windows are made of dual reinforced glass panels that absorb the heat of direct sunlight to eliminate fogging of the windows. The elevator is capable of carrying 13 persons. It is made by Hitachi, Ltd., Nippon Building, No. 8, 2-chome Ohte-machi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

ACOUSTIC ROOM

A self-contained, soundproof all- purpose room with a cellular-steel floor has been developed by Industrial Acoustics Co. Ltd., Victor House, Norris Road, Staines, Middx., UK. Fitted electrical services for built-in lighting and ventilation need only to be plugged into the mains for im- mediate operation.

The floor is covered with tiling and the walls are formed by two steel- surfaced panels on each of three sides,

and by a single panel and a door frame on the fourth side. Interlocking with vertical corner sections, as well as with each other and with channels around the edge of the steci roof, the 4in. thick panels all embody a single- glazed, safety-glass window, measuring 2 ft. 6 in. wide by 3 ft. 8 in. high by 1/4 in. thick.

The door, which is fitted with an automatic closer, provides a clear opening of 2 ft. 5 in. wide by 6 ft. 8 5/8 in. high and also incorporates a safety-glass window 1 ft. 8 in. wide by 3 ft. 3 in. high. An exhaust blower mounted on the roof operates in con- junction with a silenced ventilator system of 320 c.f.m. capacity, filtered inlets being located in the four corner sections.

Overall external dimensions of the room are 7 ft. 7% in. high by 7 ft. 5 in. long by 7 ft. wide. In its standard form the room has an enamel-paint finish in

white for the ceiling and grey for in- ternal and external wall surfaces.

LADDER

A 9ft. portable ladder, produced by W-Ribbons Ltd., Purley Way, Croydon, Surrey, UK, rolls into a 4in. diameter bundle that weighs only 2%1⁄2 lb.

Alloy rungs secured in slotted web- bing supports make the ladder light

and easier to use than conventional rope ladders. The webbing is rot-proof and abrasion restistant, the rungs being secured by a process of shrinking of the slotted webbing to provide an extremely strong and durable connec- tion.

Called the Laddalite range, ladders of this design have already been used for inspection inside oil tanks and in high-level construction work.

WALLING

A lightweight system of wall con- struction that eliminates the need for external shoring, jacking or wedges during concrete wall construction has been introduced under the brand name Permaform, by Quinton & Kaines Ltd., Stowmarket, Suffolk, UK. The system produces a wall ready faced, internally and externally, with a surface that needs no treatment prior to decoration.

The Permaform system comprises two honeycomb-cored panels joined together, with a cavity between them that can be filled on site with concrete or other bulk material. When the con- crete sets, the result is a ready-made wall faced with panels that may already be decorative.

Conduits for plumbing and electrici- ty can be installed in the cavities before they are fitted. The units are at present manufactured in 4 ft. widths, 8, 9, and 10 ft. high, with cavity widths accord ing to individual requirements.

Each panel, including the core material, measures 7/8 in. thick. The lightweight and high weight-to-rigidity ratio of the panels is determined by the core material, Dufaylite "D" mesh, a paper honeycomb with a cell diameter

of 1 in. and cell depth of 5/8 in.

Panels are joined by sliding tongued- and-grooved inter-unit connectors into place, and end stops are provided. No special tools are necessary.

BATH

The Vogue 1700 Deluxe bath add- ed to the Allied Ironfounders' range of contoured porcelain enamelled cast iron units has chromium plated brass fittings on handgrips and colour coded indicator grommets between tap heads and bath panels.

The chainless semi-captive plug situated at the side of the bath is white and the curved bath panels are in reinfored plastics with toe recess.

Measuring 1700 mm x 700 mm, the bath is supported by a steel three point framework. Additional lumbar

support is provided by a soft headrest which folds flat to form a seat. Bath and panels are available in white and 12 colours.

The makers are Allied Ironfounders Ltd., 4 Stratford Place, London, W.1.

SURFACE COATING

Masterplate surface coating, intro- duced by Embecon Pty. Ltd., 25 An- derson Street, Chatswood, N.S.W. 2067. Australia is applied as a dry shake over freshly floated concrete, then floated in to produce an iron- armoured surface. It is up to eight times more wear-resistant than plain con- crete.

The floor resists dusting, and with. stands exposure to oil, grease and many

industrial chemicals. The coating is available in natural colour and in red, terra cotta, brown, grey and black and white.

There are several standard formula- tions to meet different performance and economic requirements. One is DPS Masterplate which produces in iron- armoured concrete floor surface that is static disseminating, spark resistant, non inflammable and wear resistant.
