As the site was so steep
a gra- dient of 1 in 2 considerable ex- cavation was necessary before any building space at all was available. In order to economise on the structure and to safeguard the rear slope, the site was to be stepped.
The problem for the architect was of course to design a building accom- modating all the requirements on this very restricted and difficult area. His solution was to place the main hall on the upper floor, the chapel and the offices and the playground on the lower floors. Main columns were placed as far back from the base of the slope as possible.
The structure comprises reinforced concrete columns and beams resting on solid bedrock. The main hall is a hinged portal framed structure.
Interior
In order to minimise the visual ef- fect of walking up to reach the church, the building is raised 3 ft. from the ground level, with external steps. The entrance hall is 11⁄2 storeys high and the main staircase, 5 ft. 6 in. wide, is placed directly opposite the wide entrance doors.
A reception desk, half a flight of stairs up, overlooks the entrance hall and is placed at the level of the office floor where the church administration headquarters are housed.
