powered by a 9 volt dry battery and operated by a single joy-stick control lever. These signals are transmitted through the capacitance between the tube and the wire to a receiver set mounted in the main hoist motor con- trol cabinet.
Since there is no metalic connection between the transmitter and the steel signal wire, the control link is un- affected by rain, snow or ice and the wire cannot be damaged by the move- ment of the cages. Sufficient steel wire for the final height of the hoist tower can be wound on to a drum at the top of the structure and is simply unwound as the tower height
is increased.
One of the cages can be readily in- terchanged with a 1⁄2 cu. yard auto- matic bottom discharge concrete skip or with a simple goods carrying plat- form. These changes can be effected quickly while the hoist is in position on site.

Truck-mounted Unit Strips To Light Road Weight
CLAIMED to have one of the lightest on-road weights for a truck crane, when in travelling condition, the 30- ton-capacity Northwest 30-T truck crane strips down to approximately 20 tons to meet road-weight restric- tions.
To achieve this, the external counter-weight, comprising two cast slugs, is designed to be dropped clear in a few minutes, while the front and rear outrigger beams and boxes, each

Northwest Model 30-T weighington, are pin-connected to the chassis for easy removal.
The rugged alloy-steel boom fea- tures heavy supporting legs and re- inforcing members, and is mounted on a cast-steel machinery base. It reaches its maximum 30-ton lifting capacity at a radius of 12 ft.

is a finger-light clutch control that employs the power of the engine to actuate the drum clutches, which also have a cushioned "shock reliever". The slewing clutch is of the uniform- pressure disc type, and offers a large contact area. Optional extras include gear-driven power lowering under
load, and a third winch drum for use where an extra load line is required.

TRUCKS
Heavy Duty Models by International Harvester
THREE new trucks in their AACO cab-over-engine series have been re- leased by International Harvester Co. of Australia Pty. Ltd., 171 City Road. South Melbourne.
They are the AACO-184, the AACOF-184 and the AACODF-184. The AACOF and the AACODF fea- ture through drive type tandem rear axles making them suited to concrete agitator or tipping operations. The design of the AACO-184 allows it to be used with semi-trailers up to 39 ft. long.
Both the AACO-184 and the AACOF-184 are powered by the In- ternational V-345 V-8 petrol gine. This develops a maximum of 177 b.h.p. at 4,000 r.p.m. and maxi- mum torque of 302 lb. ft. at 2,000 r.p.m.
en-
The AACODF-184 is powered by the Perkins six cylinder direct injec- tion diesel engine. Developing 120 b.h.p. at 2,800 r.p.m., this engine has a maximum torque of 260 lb. ft. at 1,450 r.p.m.
Axle
The through drive tandem axle unit on the AACOF and the AACODF features hypoid gearing, high torque capacity and simplified design, shafts are induction hardened giving them great ability to absorb shock loads. A power divider lock, mount- ed in front of the bogie axles can be locked in position to give increased traction in soft ground.
The AACO-184 has a constant mesh five forward speed transmis- sion; the AACOF and the AACODF have constant mesh five forward speed transmissions sup- plemented by three ratio auxiliary transmissions.

CRANE
35 ton Model with Jib Extensions to 180 ft.
INTENDED for general lifting and construction work on site, the Coles Illustrious diesel-electric crane is mounted on a 6 x 4-wheel truck car- rier. It can be equipped either as a conventional strut jib crane, or as a self-erecting tower crane. Full circle slewing without limit is available for both functions.
When equipped as a strut jib crane. the maximum duty is 35 tons on a basic 25 ft. jib at 12 ft, radius, block- ed. Jib extensions
are available to en- able various jib lengths to be as- sembled. up to a maximum of 160 ft., or 180 ft. with fly jib fitted. Hoist- ing speed per single line is 60 ft./min. with a 5 ton load.
The chassis is 9 ft. 6 in. wide. Drive to the road wheels is taken from the chassis- mounted diesel en- gine through a six speed gearbox and auxiliary gearbox.
Illustrious The engine is an AEC AV. 760 developing 217 h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. Maximum road speed is 27 m.p.h.
Powered outriggers may be fitted to raise the crane so that all tyre and axle loading is removed.
The diesel engine on the super- structure is a Ford 2701E. develop- ing 64 h.p. at 2.200 r.p.m. It is directly coupled to a variable voltage generator which energises the inde- pendent electric motors of the three crane motions.
The crane structure folds away for road travelling with only a 9 ft. over- hang forward of the cap.
The makers are The British Crane and Excavator Corp.. Crown Works. Sunderland, UK.
