SOILTESTING
Compression Test Apparatus for Use in Field
A NEW unconfined compression ap- paratus for testing soils has been in- troduced by Soiltest, Inc. The U-560 apparatus is used in conducting the unconfined compression test of soil specimens. It re- quires no pressure ог electrical con- nections, weighs only 25 lb. and can be used in either the field or laboratory.

Equipped with 3 in. diameter test platens, the ad- justable upper platen allows test- ing of specimen up to 8 in. in length.

Loads are appli- ed to the specimen hand through a crank actuated gearing arrangement located in the totally enclosed base. The rate of strain can be regulated during the test by turning the hand crank at the desired rate. Loads are indicated on a double proving ring assembly which has a capacity of 1,500 lb.

LOUVRES
Three Forms for Suspended Ceilings or Windows
THE introduction of three new forms of low-brightness and glare- free precision lighting material is an- nounced by Courtney Pope (Electrical) Ltd., Amhust Park Works, London. N. 15. Two are louvres and the other is a prismatic sheet in two varieties of prism formation.
The two louvres are Parahex and Thincell. Parahex is a metalised plas- tic styrene, louvres consisting of an open hexagonal design and available in specular and satin finishes, the former achieving very low brightness at ilu- mination levels of 150 to 200 lumens per sq. ft. Thincell is an opal plastic styrene louvre, light-stabilized to resist ultra violet discolouring. The louvre is available in 4 ft. x 2 ft. sheets and comprises 1⁄2 in. square cells, Thincell being derived from the 0.65 in. thick- ness of each cellwall,
The third material is a prismatic lighting sheet which can be supplied in two prism shapes, one a depressed. hexagonal and the other an expressed pyramid. These are available in an 8 ft. x 2 ft. panel size and are design- ed for use where low-brightness and a degree of surface sparkle are re- quired for environmental effect.
All three forms can be employed in suspended luminous ceilings, win- dows, lay-lights or lighting fittings.

The unit, in a stove enamel white or grey casing measuring 36 in. x 12 in. x 12 in. operates as follows: The air is taken in through an inlet grille, passed through filters, heated to 70 degrees F. and introduced into the area or room.
Rated to handle 200 c.f.m.. the unit has two stages of filtration. The first is a dust filter of polyurethane with an efficiency of 98 per cent. down to 2 mu. The second is a large area activated charcoal element which removes vapours, fumes and odours.
