Timber sheet piles 2′′ thick were driven to a level 5 ft. below Principal Datum using pneumatic hammers and puddled clay was then placed outside the sheet piles to ensure watertight- ness. It was found possible to de- water the cofferdams in 3 hours by using one 6 in. diameter diesel cen- trifugal pump working together with two 4 in. diam. diesel pumps and the excavation was kept dry by using one 6" diam. together with one 4" diam. pump. This method proved satisfac- tory irrespective of the tide level.

Although working space inside the cofferdam was restricted, the excava- tion by hand labour and stripping of pile heads to expose reinforcement presented no problem. The bottom of the excavation was taken down to a level of 2 ft. 3 in. below the Prin- cipal Datum and a 2” thick lean con- crete blinding layer was placed on top of a 3" compacted thickness of hard- core. Fixing of formwork and rein- forcement then followed this opera- tion. The pilecap measuring 84'-8" long by 8'-0" wide by 2'-10" deep was then concreted in a 1:6 mix us- ing 3/4" maximum size of aggregate. All concrete was placed in the dry.

Abutment pilecaps constructed 5 feet above Principal Datum presented no dewatering problems and work was straightforward.

Abutments and Piers

The reinforced concrete abutments measuring 84'-8" long by 5'-8" wide by 12'-0" high were concreted as soon as the pilecaps were completed. Steps were cast in the top levels of the abutments and piers to receive the beam seatings and to accommodate the 1:48 deck crossfall.

In order to reduce the deadload carried by the pipe group and to pro- duce a pleasing appearance, four 9-
