NEW CONTRACTOR'S
Link-Belt LS-408 backhoe
BACKHOE
Separate Power for Each Operation
—
FULL-FUNCTION design is the title applied by Link-Belt Speeder Co., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA, to their new 24 cu. yd. capacity backhoe. It means that the unit has a separate power flow for each function, allow- ing all operations to be carried out independently or in any
combina-
tion.
The backhoe, LS-408, has a 60 in. cutting width, a maximum digging radius of 51 ft. 2 in. and a maximum digging depth of 31 ft. 5 in. with a 45 degree boom. Lifting capacity when used for laying pipe is 32,700 lb. at 20 ft. to 25 ft. boom radius.
For stability, the LS-408 is mount- ed on a wide lower with 12 ft. guage and 19 ft. 5 in. overall length. Trackshoes of 38 in. and power steering are standard equipment. Steering and digging brakes are au- tomatically spring applied and power is hydraulically released The ma- chine may be converted to a clam- shell, dragline or lifting crane.
LOADER-DIGGER
Boom Slews Through 360 Degees
A COMBINATION
excavator-loader-
dozer is being made by the British company, Whitlock Bros. The digger boom, mounted at the rear of a tractor, slews through 360 degrees which means that it can excavate at the rear and load over the front into a lorry.
As a loader it has a reach of 16 ft. 6 in. from the slew post in all directions. There is a range of hy- draulic grabs, including a 10 cwt. crane hook attachment for materials handling, off-loading and lowering pipes into trenches.

The control platform pivots with the machine which means that the driver is on top of and facing his work at all times and has all-round visibility.
Whitlock's export Department is at Great Yeldham, Essex, UK. They have no agents in the Far East.

gearbox, universals and converted differential to 2in. ASA chain drive to the drum.
The Model 6 has a 44in. wide drum mouth opening. Its swivel chute is of the swing-away type for open pouring into kibbles and is hydraulically controlled for height height adjustment. Extension chutes give a total radius of 14 ft. through 190 degrees.
A double flight of blades is fitted in the mixer. Drum rollers are of 9in. diameter with Timken bearings. The fibre glass water tank has a capacity of 70 gallons and the water system includes a water pump driven by power-take-off. Controls to gears, clutch, water pump and throttle are in key positions at both the motor and discharge points
Marlak agents in Hong Kong are Siemssen and Co., Ltd., and in the Philippines, Marvex Commercial, Manila. Agents are still required in other South East Asian centres.
SPREADER
Fast Rate of Laying Road Surface
AGENTS in South East Asia are being sought by Civil Engineering Plant, Ltd., Littleworth, Wing, Beds., UK, for a hydraulic tarmacadam spreader.
Designed for easy handling the machine has a small turning circle, hydraulic transmission for travelling between any speed from 0 to 10 m.p.h. in forward or reverse and a hydrastatic braking action.
Only two thickness adjusting screws and one camber screw are fitted to give the required thickness of material. All irregularities are effaced during the base coat applica- tion so that any undulations are lost during the final topping process. When laying a base coat the machine will spread at the rate of 1 ton a minute. The rate for the final top coat is 25 tons an hour.
Drive is from a Lister HB2 air cooled diesel, through a Plessey hydraulic transmission unit, then through a gear box to the rear axle. A duplex chain drives the road wheels. Feed and distribution of the surfacing material is regulated by a slat conveyor and a scroll.
