Earth Dam Pumping Station
replaced by a 21-bay reinforced concrete barrage with 15 regulating gates. The main portion of the dam is 235 metres long and the protection bund adds a further 75 metres. The top is 18 metres above the river bed.
In the excavation work on this site the authorities have used a sand pump and water gun combination. Earth and small stones are loosened by a powerful jet from a large bore water gun and the turbid water is carried by the sand pump down river. Three such water guns used at a pressure of 3 to 5 kilos per sq. centimetre in conjunction with one sand pump are said to be able to remove 2,000 cu. metres of earth in 24 hours.
Prefabricated concrete units have been used in the construction of the dam.
At this site the strata below the river bed presented great difficulties. After excavation by hammer drills a leak-proof wall, 8 meters wide and over ten metres deep, was con- structed across the river bed, paral- lel to the dam.
Before the construction of this dam commenced many model tests on soil, strata and osmosis were carried out.
Sample Tests
The general headquarters of the whole project is at Tang Tou Hsia. Here apparatus was set up to examine and analyse the physical, chemical and dynamic properties of the concrete material. Resistance to water errosion is tested in another chemical laboratory and sample tests on the quality of the structural con- crete are carried out continuously. Standardised sand used in the con- crete tests comes from Ping Tam in the Fukien Province.
In this thorough check on the standards of materials used more than 50 qualitative surveyors stationed throughout the work sites.
