SIDE-GRIPPING LIFTER

New tools for the construction industry make the carrying of kerb stones, bricks and paving stones simple and safe and reduce risks of breakages through accidental dropping.

A side-gripping kerb lifter, made of welded steel, can be placed on either side of a stone and the load is lifted quite simply by two workmen by means of the two handles. The act of lifting provides the necessary grip for holding

the kerbstone during carrying; the heavier the load, the firmer the grip. When not in use the tool folds flat. Weight is 11 lb (5 kg) and it measures 20 in by 30 in (508 by 762 mm). A second tool, which grips the kerbstone at each end, has a single carrying bar at the top. It can also be used for carrying paving stones and for placing them in position.

Another tool is a brick-lifter for carrying seven to eight bricks at a time. It is adjustable and, once again, the action of lifting provides gripping power on the bricks. Please address further enquiries to Mustang Tools Ltd., Lamas, Norwich, England.

NON-SKID COATING

An anti-skid coating system, pro- cessed by a British company, can be used on steel, wood or concrete floors. The system is a combination of high adhesion, hard wearing epoxy resin and an ultra-hard chemical grit.

On steel flooring, a thin coat of epoxy resin is applied and adheres to metal with a bond strength of about 1800 lbf/in2 (126,55 kgf/cm2). This

forms a firm base and after about three hours the resin becomes hard and dry, but not fully cured, then a second, thicker coat is spread and the two bond together.

While the second coat is still wet granules of very tough wear-resistant calcined bauxite are scattered over the surface. They sink partly into the resin, leaving protrusions that make the surface non-skid even when splashed with water or industrial fluids.

At 65°F (18.3°C) this second coat- ing, which is usually about 1/16th in (1.587 mm) thick, is not sticky in 8 to 12 hours and hard dry in 24 hours. No solvents are involved. The resin cures by exothermic reaction with a solidi- fier.

The company says that the com- pleted surface has a high resistance to wear and can undergo a considerable amount of movement and vibration without cracking. Please address en- quiries to Lamacrest Ltd., Crown Works, Cold Bath Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire, U.K.

GARAGE DOOR OPENER

A new portable automatic garage door opener makes it less costly to offer the convenience and security of this increasingly popular home appli-

ance.

The 'Astro 3' automatic residential garage door opener, packaged in one easy-to-carry carton containing all the

components and radio controls, can be installed easily by the builder or the homeowner himself. Other features of the Astro 3 include a safety slip clutch that halts door travel when it encoun- ters an obstruction, instant door rever-

sal from either transmitter or wall but- ton, and a courtesy light that comes on automatically when door starts to open and stays on until the door is shut and locked.

The Astro 3 will operate sectional doors up to 72 ft high and 18 in wide and one-piece receding doors up to 8 ft high and 18 ft wide. It can be used with existing doors. Range of the port- able radio transmitters is 40 to 100 ft from the garage. For more informa- tion, write to The Stanley Works, International Sales Dept., New Britain, Conn. 06050, U.S.A.

DRY VERGE SYSTEM

The search for all-weather methods of construction has led The Marley Tile Company to launch its Dry Verge System for roofing. This new approach to the finishing of tiled roof verges is extremely elegant and maintenance

free. It has the important advantage of being completely adjustable for the variable over-hang that occurs at the verge. Dry Verges are manufactured from white extruded PVC sections, and amount to simple components.

In use, the Dry Verge System is laid directly onto the barge board or brickwork and eliminates the use of undercloaks of any kind and bedding mortar. It affords a completely dry construction and, in consequence, can be fixed in any weather, saving time and costly finishing delays. Fixing is simple and quick and is at three points only, at the top and bottom of the starter piece and at the head of the main length. The system can be used with two thicknesses of battens 19 mm and 25 mm; and two types of tile, the Marley Modern and Ludlow Major. By the end of the year a larger section to accommodate the Wessex will be made.

The Marley Dry Verge will provide security in any weather and gives a clean line at the gable end of the roof. For further information, please write to Marley Tile Co., Sevenoaks, Kent, U.K.
