HE greater the number of hous- ing units projected, the more economical becomes the use of indus- trialised building methods. Initial costs of setting up a factory, plant and experienced supervisors are high and it is only on large-scale projects

or when the factory is ensured of a continuous market for its products that the cost per housing unit is re- duced below that of conventionally built homes.

It is not surprising therefore that the Kuala Lumpur Municipality faced with an urgent need to provide thou- sands of homes for lower-income groups. should make their first indus- trialised building scheme one of con- siderable magnitude.

The pilot scheme comprises 3,000 flats, to be distributed in 17-storey blocks. It was drawn up by the Municipal Architect, Mr. S. P. Chow. FRIBA, who has studied factory pro- duction and housing estates on the Continent of Europe.

Five groups were invited to tender for the project. Four are the licencees of French systems and one uses a Danish method. The systems in com- petition were: Camus, Tracoba, Barets, Estiot, Coignet, and Larsen and Nielsen,

The successful bid was submitted by the Danish firm, Larsen and Niel- sen, who are associated in a joint ven- ture with Gammon Malaya, Ltd. Last month Mr. Chow visited Denmark for further consultations with the firm.

Most of the 3.000 flats will be in seven blocks of 17 storeys (Fig. 1) which will have shops and stores at first floor level. In addition there will be four four-storey blocks.

A typical 17-storey block will mea- sure 252 ft. long by 59 ft. deep. It will have stairs and three lifts at the central core and staircases at each end. The inner parts of the block will include a light shaft and access galleries to the flats.
