Books
Design of Reinforced Concrete by
H. J. Cowan & P. R. Smith. Pub- lished in 1963 by Angus & Robert- son Ltd. Price £6 10s.
Whilst this book is primarily written for students in Australia, many of its design procedures, like the S.A.A. Code, conform to latest British and American Standards.
An outline history of reinforced concrete in Chapter 2 is very en- lightening even to non-beginners and examples of the use of concrete in modern architecture will prove stimulating to students and engineers alike.
Other chapters deal with elements of reinforced concrete design in a simple and comprehensive way to make it suitable both to reinforced concrete and architectural students. Most of the diagrams are carefully chosen and well drawn and many design tables are added to facilitate practical design.
One feature of this book is that it gives a thorough exposition of the theoretical requirements of the S.A.A. Code, especially those of torsion and columns with helical reinforcement. Chapter 8 on Experimental Stress Analysis, Chapter 1 on Principles of Folded Plates and Shell Roof, and Chapter 21 on An Introduction to Ultimate Load Design enhance the value of this well-written book.

Project Planning and Control in the
Construction Industry
G. by Turner and K. Elliott. Published by Cassell, London. 42 shillings.
In the building and construction industry there are not a few prin- cipals and executives of the small and medium undertakings who are adept at producing good results on the scale to which they are accus- tomed without consciously planning their activities.
stage
There is for everyone a beyond which one cannot effectually plan or control a project without formal calculations and a degree of delegation with a consequent sacrifice of intimate control.
These points are raised and de- veloped by the authors who have produced a useful guide for the benefit of anyone who wishes to in- ject system and urgency into a set of operations. Readers will find that processes are dealt with clearly and fully, but always with the reservation that the selected processes are to be applied for chosen purposes and they are not ends in themselves.

A handsomely produced book which, except for the Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Islamic chapters, divides the periods chronologically into Ancient & Classical, Medieval, each with Renaissance & Modern its own author.
The text is to one side of the page with, usually, four photographs or plans alongside. For continuity of the text marginal numbers refer to the nearby photographs which are captioned additionally.
Giving the social background to the period is permissible, as it usually has a bearing on the architecture produced, but Mr. Andrew Boyd's account of the Chinese female suc- cession, whilst of general interest. seems to be an account of a cause with no architectural effect.
The Modern period which includes Ronchamp, Hunstauton School, Cas- trol House and the T.W.A. Airport Building does not contain any modern Japanese buildings pre- sumably left out on the assumption that it was to have been included in the Japanese chapter.
This is really a beautiful book, containing some superb full page colour photographs and several of the 1038 black and white illustrations are new. A joy to own.
