was an M$800,000 project for the extension of Dunman Road and the construction of a new bridge across the Geylang River. The project was supervised by the Singapore Public Works Department under the State's first Five Year Development Plan (1961-65).
The idea was to provide a by-pass for traffic between the city and Katong and the east coast of Singa- pore island. By diverting traffic from the densely populated area be- tween Geylang, Mountbatten Road and Guillem.ard Road, congestion was relieved in these areas while at the same time, the new road provided faster, more direct route for through traffic.

A dual carriageway linking Mount- batten Road and Tanjong Katong Road, the road starts at Kallang Circus and follows the line of old Airport Road and Dunman Road. The alignment is roughly in continua- tion of the old Kallang airstrip.
The new road is about 4,500 ft. long. It has been provided with two 24 ft. wide carriageways, together with footpaths and cycle tracks. Modern street lighting has been installed along the centre dividers, with one row of trees planted in between.
Under the scheme, part of the old Airport Road, which was laid down to serve the Kallang Housing Estate, has been brought up to required main road standards. The length east of Jalan Satu to Tanjong Katong Road is entirely new.

To put the new road to use, it was also necessary to construct bridge over the Geylang River. Work started on this in mid-1964 and was completed by February 1965.
The new bridge is 90 ft. long and 85 ft. wide overall, with provision for two 24 ft. carriageways and two 12 ft. cycle tracks-cum-footpaths.
