DRAFTING EQUIPMENT

Accurate drawings can be produced in outdoor or inconvenient locations by means of the Schablo Flack port- able drawing board. Produced in West Germany, it incorporates an adjustable rule, graduated in mm and is available in A3 and A4 Continental sizes.

The hardened-plastic board pre- sents a completely-smooth surface,

permitting stencils and squares to be used over the whole drawing area. A double groove and ridge moulded into the left-hand side of the board serves as alternative locations for the plastic rule. Fitted into the inside groove, the rule moves freely up and down the board, while set over the inner ridge it is more firmly held but will still slide under fingertip pressure; when fitted over the outer ridge however, it locks firmly into any chosen horizontal posi- tion, leaving both the operator's hands free.

The rule itself is engraved in mm. graduations and with a protractor, and further graduations in mm are engrav- ed on vertical and horizontal edges of the board. A metal clamp also fitted on the left-hand side acts magnetically to provide a positive grip on several

sheets of paper.

In the A4 size, the board measures overall 10%1⁄2 in. wide by 13% in. deep (276 by 349 mm) and in the A3 size, 13% by 20 in. (349 by 508 mm). With respective designations of No. 15A4 and 15A3, these basic models can be supplied with a protective plastic en- velope as an optional extra. Alterna- tively, both sizes of board are available

SOUND LEVEL METER

The Dawe octave-band sound-level meter Type 1419C has been specially developed to include a D weighting network for measuring aircraft noise. It can be used for measurements with- in the range 24 to 140 dB. with its standard stable-ceramic microphone, or up to 200 dB. with a high-level microphone.

In addition to the A, B, C and D weighting-network positions on the function switch, the 1419C meter has an octave-band filter setting which en- ables it to make use of a related mid- band frequency-selector switch to take readings in all eight frequency bands. A fast-slow switch damps the meter

Housed in an aluminium case, fin- ished in blue plastic, the meter mea- sures 4 in. high by 9% in. wide by 10 in. long (108 by 248 by 254 mm). It weights approximately 7 lb. 10 oz. (3.5 kg.) and incorporates a tripod bush in the case,

COMPASSES

The Mars Superbow and Superbow S compasses are equipped with a quick-set centre bar which locks at any required diameter and may be adjusted by one hand.

Both instruments take various ac- cessories, including an extension bar

Superbow compass with extension and pen point. The use of nylon re- duces wear on moving parts. A circle of 366 mm diameter may be drawn with the Superbow S, which has a matt-chromium finish and is 171 mm long. By using an extension piece the diameter of the circle can be increased to 615 mm.

The Superbow compass is shorter than its counterpart, having a length of 154mm, and is matt-nickel finished. This model can describe a circle of 338 mm diameter, increased to 569 mm with an extension bar.

The makers are J.S. Staedtler, Numberg, West Germany. Agents in- clude: Cornwell & Co., Hong Kong; Diethelm & Co. Ltd., Singapore; and Pecton Mercantile, Manila.
