by the Pelubang barrage. Flow in the canals is controlled by a series of regu- lators placed at four to five mile inter- vals.
The main canals cross three rivers through inverted siphons and a fourth by a reinforced concrete aqueduct. Some canal offtakes are similar in de- sign to the regulators, which have oil- hydraulically operated overshot gates, but most are piped with manually operated control by sluice gates.
A control scheme ensures that the best use is made of available water sup- plies, including run-off from the catch- ments below Pedu dam and rainfall on the irrigated area. Substantial storage for these uncontrolled supplies is avail- able on the padi fields themselves, and draw-off from the Muda-Pedu reservoir is reduced to a minimum.
Data are transmitted by telemetry and teleprinter to and from a control centre where processing is effected by a computer. In order to arrange the most advantageous distribution of water by the canal system, the com- puter arrives at the principal gate set- tings and canal levels required.
Construction of the project was completed on schedule at a total cost of approximately M$210 million.
