slightly different in character. bathrooms also are differentiated, be- ing finished in different colours and materials.

Separating this part of the house from the block containing the main sitting-room and the master bedroom is the hall, which has a white marble floor and a teak on reinforced con- crete staircase with a brass balustrade. This section has distinctive teak win- dows with long thin panes and nar- row deep mullions. On entering from the front door one can at once see through to the terrace beyond.

The living room block is wider than the bedroom wing and square.

The sitting room on the ground floor oc- cupies the complete area of this block and is a spacious room. Two of the walls are occupied by the large win- dows looking out on to the terrace. the other two are finished with cork tiles.

The floor is of wood strip and the room is sparingly furnished with spe- cial pieces which give distinction and elegance. This sitting-dining room is connected with the kitchen by a short linking unit which gives direct acces between these two related areas but at the same time emphasises the de- tachment of the kitchen block from the rest of the house.

Above the sitting room is the mas- ter bedroom suite, occupying the same area as the living room, but sub-divid- ed to give a bathroom and also a

slight difference between the sleeping and sitting areas. It is more intimate yet at the same time still a spacious

area.

This third and topmost level also has its terrace looking out to sea, but in this case it is a small private wooden verandah. Standing here the levels of the house project forwards and fall away from one so that one has something of the feeling of being

on a ship. This part of the house is withdrawn from the rest and quite pri- vate yet here one gets a good sense of the unity of the composition, which seems quite complex at first sight.

Interior design was by Pacific Con- tract International. The main con- tractor was Shiu Tai Construction Company. Time of building, includ- ing the difficult site formation was about 14 months.
