care of the most sultry periods, an axial flow flan in each throat can boost the extraction up to 720,000 cu. ft. a minute when required.

Hazards

While the buildings are designed to withstand the worst of Hong Kong's weather, there is little defence against it during actual construction work.

The summer of 1964 broke all records for rainfall and typhoons and as a result much delay was caused to the civil works by repeated flood- ing of the site and time spent on tying down plant and partially erect- ed steelwork.

on

Fortunately only the last typhoon of ten affecting the colony. October 13, caused any site damage and this was due to forces outside the control of the contractors. Two unladen 7,000 ton cargo ships broke adrift in the harbour and came ashore on the site.

to

Miraculously they did no damage

the then operating temporary pumphouse, but they did damage ex- tensively the partially completed sheet piling of the permanent pumphouse cofferdam.

All this is now repaired and during the past five months of perfect dry weather overall progress has been ex- tremely good. The pace of construc- tion is being accelerated to

ensure

that everything on site is sufficuently far advanced to meet the possible onslaught of this year's typhoon season. By May or June it is hoped that the superstructure cladding and roofing, together with the main fcundations of the permanent pum- phouse, will be substantially com- pleted.

Generating Plant

Despite these delays and setbacks, all the originally agreed programme hand-over dates have been met so far and every endeavour is being made to meet them in the future for the turbines, cabling and switchgear.

The 120 MW total requirement of the new station is to be provided by
