tecture of a particular country, but in view of the tropical climate open balconies are provided in each suite.

Structurally, the commons build- ing is a single-storey unit with its radial folded plate roof resting on two triangular rigid bents at right angles to each other.

The dormitory buildings are two- storey blocks, framed by columns and beams of precast reinforced con- crete. Resting on the beams

are

prestressed concrete floor slabs of the double-tee type, cantilevered at both ends. The economies and rapid construction rates achieved by these two structural systems is giving them an increasing popularity in the Philippines.

Three Stages

The new International Centre will be sited in the north east region of the campus property

on an area

bounded by Magsaysay Avenue and F. Ma. Guerrero Street, Quezon City. It will be built in three stages.

The first phase will have a capacity of 60 students and the completed project will accommodate two hun- dred. Included in the first phase will be the commons building and two flanking dormitory units.

Total cost of the centre is expect- ed to be one million pesos.

The ground breaking ceremonies were held last month, when the uni- versity president, Dr. Carlos P. Romulo, and vice-president of the Rockefeller Foundation, New York, Dr. Kenneth W. Thompson, laid the

cornerstone.
