The revised estimate for 1956/57 shows an increase of $11,000,000 over the approved estimate. With the exception of duty on locally manufactured liquor which remains at $9,800,000, increases occur in every item viz. $4,200,000 on hydrocarbon oils because of the popularity of kerosene as cooking fuel; $500,000 on intoxicating liquor; $100,000 on liquor other than intoxicating liquor; $4,000,000 on tobacco; $1,500,000 on proprietary medicines and toilet prepara- tions; $700,000 on table waters. The upward trend is reflected in the estimate for 1957/58.

The excess of $6,200,000 in the revised estimate over the approved estimate is due

to the continued increase in building development. This increase is expected to go on into 1957/58.

The revised estimate shows an increase of $15,250,000 over the approved estimate. There is an increase of $18,000,000 in estate duty mainly on account of two large estates. The final payments on one large estate are not expected until 1957/58 and this is reflected in the estimate for next year. Business registration fees, dance halls tax and entertainment tax also show increases. There is, however, an expected reduction of $7,500,000 in earnings and profits tax due to a reduction of arrears brought forward from previous years.

An increase of $2,156,179 is shown in the revised estimate for 1956/57 as against the approved estimate. The total increase on all forms of licences is $1,005,999, the main items being air services, liquor, pawnbrokers, tobacco, and vehicles, motor, foreign registration. An increase of $1,150,180 is shown under fines and forfeitures.
