standstill about the 11th November. The Customs stations at Changteh, which had been moved from Yochow and Chenglingki in October, ceased to function on the 13th November. Direct imports from abroad recorded a nil value as compared with $0.6 million for 1937. There were no importations of kerosene oil-which usually represents the principal item under this trade,-while bonded stocks had all beer withdrawn by the end of 1937. Even in normal year Yochow has no direct export trade, native products destined for foreign countries being re-exported at Hankow and treated at Yochow as interport movements. The value of coastwise imports of Chinese produce decreased to $5.8 million and that of coastwise exports to $2 million as compared with $12.7 million and $15.2 million respectively in 1937. With the exception of nankeens-which advanced from 5,988 quintals valued at $0.6 million in 1937 to 28,193 quintals valued at $3.9 million, a falling-off was recorded in the domestic import of piece-goods, due to the closing down of factories in war areas down river. As a result of disruption in river traffic, salt from Haichow declined to 41,663 quintals valued at $0.2 million, as compared with 1,236,672 quintals valued at $6.5 million during 1937. Yochow has long been a distributing centre of this commodity for the neighbouring districts. Cigarettes also declined, while cement fell off entirely. Coastwise shipments of wood oil-the mainstay of the export, trade-declined to 12,553 quintals valued at $0.6 million, as against 164,357 quintals valued at $13.5 million in 1937 Disruption of river communication and lack of freight space on the railway to the South restricted the movement of this commodity. Ramie from Yüankiang declined for similar reasons to 20,708 quintals valued at $0.9 million from 22,737 quintals valued at $1 million in 1937. Decreases were also, recorded in hides and lotus-nuts, while improvements were registered under nutgalls and raw cotton..
