CHOLON

This town, distant four miles from Saigon, with which it is connected by one electric and two steam tramways, is the seat of most of the Chinese trade of the Colony. Cholon may be said to be the granary of Cochin-China, and is the centre of much commercial activity. Most of the rice mills are located in this place, there being no fewer than 10, of which five are owned by a French society. The town is administered by a Municipal Council, composed partly of French, partly of Annamites, and partly of Chinese. The population is about 200,000. The principal buildings are the Mairie (Town Hall), the Inspection (Provincial Government), the Maternité, and the Hôpital. There are also a fair number of gorgeous Chinese pagodas in the city.
