Of the total tonnage, the principal carriers, according to flag and importance, were: British, 266,073 tons; Chinese, 231,728 tons; Japanese, 54,854 tons; and Ameri can 21,754 ton's. The last Japanese river steamer left Changsha on the 5th August carrying the Japanese evacuees from the port.

With the completion of the Hunan-Szechwan road, Hunan has been connected by motor highways with all of the six neighbouring provinces. Accordinf to statement published by the Highways Bureau in April, the total length of motor roads within the province then amounted to 2,395, kilometres, all well surfaced with gravel. The Eurasia Aviation Cor- poration resumed their Hankow-Hongkong airplane service (including a stop at Changsha) in July of the year under review.
