the northwest gave added impetus to trade at Lienyunchiang, the value of imports. amounting to $22.6 million, the principal among which being metals, sugar, paper, cotton cloth, dyes, cement, and rice. The chief features of the export trade were the greatly increased shipments of coal to Japan and of raw cotton to domestic ports. The number of inland waters steamers, all under tho Chinese flag, entered and cleared during the year was 513, with a tonnage of 928,764, showing an increase of 201,343 tons over the figure for 1935. Junk-borne cargo declined by 50 per cent, but export cargo carried by junk registered a 100 per cent increase.
