Following the arrival of the giant dredger Chienshe from Danzig in April, the dredging on the Yangtze Bar was commenced. Soundings taken early in December showed that over a million cubic yards of mud and sand were removed, resulting in an average deepening of about 3 feet over the area dredged. The right entrance training wall of the Whangpoo was raisel and extended over a mile and a half to approach the shore of the Yangtze. Much progress was witnessed in the development of the Civic Centre, among the important;buildings completed being a public library, a museum, and a stadium, all of which will be available for use as soon as the internal arrangements are completed. The Central Bank of China proceeded vigorously with its scheme in connexion with the building of the Chiukong Wharf above Woosung. More than 1,100 mou of land have been expropriated for the purpose. Along the river front of this site several reinforced concrete wharf sections will be constructed for the accommodation of ocean-going steamers, with warehouses, facilities for Customs examination of cargo and passengers" lugrige, offices, and a spacious and luxurious waiting room. On completion, the wharf, it is said, will be one of the finest of its kind in the Far East. Owing to the growth of population and the increase in the number of factories in Pootung in recent years, the Municipal Government of Shanghai are constructing an up-to date waterworks in that district. It is anticipated that the water supply will be available in May 1936. The population of Shanghai fluctuated. between 3,490,000 and 3,560,000, during the year, showing an increase of some, 100,000.

persons over 1934.
