the coastwise exportations of Chinese produce over the whole period under review. Advances in the figures for varnish (from 4,347 to 6,332 quintals), vegetable tallow, raw cotton, and nankeens contributed to the improvement in the export statistics. A further increase is, recorded for the shipping trade: entrances and clearances numbered 2,435 vessels, aggregating 1,097,000 tons, as against 2,386 vessels, aggregating 1,010,000 tons, in the previous year. One Japanese ship plied regularly on the Upper Yangtze, the first to do so since 1931. Land communications were improved by the completion during the year of the last of the previously unfinished sections of the Ichang-Hankow motor highway. The air service between Hankow and Chungking was well main- tained, and the number of planes increased from four to six each way per week. The local aerodrome is being extended, involving considerable work and ex- pense in levelling the hilly ground bordering on the original site.
