CHINA
The outward trade was greatly assisted by the general reduction in the Export Tariff rates referred to in the introduction to this report; and another favourable factor was the unusually strong demand for certain produce owing. to the failure of similar or correlated crops abroad, particularly oil seeds and foodstuffs for cattle. On the other hand, this section of trade was handicapped by the great drought in China, financial stringency caused by the exodus of silver towards the end of the year, and certain other internal troubles from which the country has not yet had time to recover.
The following table displays comparative statistics for the value of the export trade during the past two years, arranged according to the groupings used in the "Monthly Returns of the Foreign Trade of China," and further arranged according to the order of importance assumed by these groupings during the year under review:-
