European and Chinese have taken up large areas for planting, chiefly rubber, pineapples and coconuts. The export of tapioca was 201,590 piculs in 1933, as compared with 230,554 piculs in 1932, and the values were $681,373 and $785,784 respect- ively. The export of rubber in 1933 amounted to 1,626,175 piculs, valued at $22,622,970 against 1,456,312 piculs in 1932, valued at $13,902,311. A remarkable feature of the rubber industry in this State is the large amount of land taken up by the Japanese. In 1933, 813,086 piculs of copra, valued at $3,193,515 and 248,046 piculs of areca nuts, valued at $542,169, were exported.

At the present time the principal exports of Johore are the carefully cultivated rubber, copra, gambier, pepper and areca-nuts, and the natural products of tin, timber, rattans and damar. For almost all such produce Singapore is the port of shipment.

Johore is rich in iron ore, and a mine is being successfully worked by Japanese in Batu Pahat and 408,644 tons of ore worth $2,043,120 were exported in 1933.

The export of tin ore in 1933 amounted to 306 tons.
