This port, called by the Japanese Jiusen, and by the Chinese Jenchuan, is situated on the west coast of Chosen (Korea), in the metropolitan province of Kyongki, at the entrance of the Salée River, an embouchure of the Han or Seoul River. It was opened to foreign trade in 1883, when it was a poor fishing village, and is now a flourishing and rapidly increasing centre of trade, with a population in January 1932 of 63,881 (Koreans 51,005, Japanese 11,373).

The annual trade of Chemulpo is about Yen 140,000,000 (about 1,200,000 tons of shipping). Its principal drawback is a tidal variation of 33 feet, owing to which there only exists berthing accomodation at present for 3 vessels of 4,500 tons. All larger vessels must lie outside Sho-Getsubito island, in the outer anchorage. A new scheme of reconstruction, calls for an expenditure of Yen 1,400,000, and includes the construction of a berthing pier 371 metres long on the south side of dock to accomo- date 5 vessels of 2,000 tons, the reclamation of an area of 87,375 square metres for warehouses etc. and the building of a groin to prevent silting.

The steamers of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, the Osaka Shosen Kaisha and the Chosen Yusen Kaisha ply regularly between Clemulpo, other Korean ports and Japan, and the latter company runs services to Antung, Dairen; Tsingtao Dairen; Chinnampo, Dairen, and Fusan, Shanghai.

Every effort is being made by the Government-General to make Chemulpo the principal port in Chosen for the distribution of through freight and passengers to all parts of the country. Railway lines have been and are being extended to the N.W. and N.E. borders, with Seoul as the centre, and all the ports around the coast are being connected up with the trunk lines.
