TENGYUEH (MOMEIN)

Government's decision to remove the export duties on silk as on May, one of the main .enterprises of the district being the export of Szechuan silk to Burma. The benefits accruing from these helpful conditions were offset to some extent by the serious business depression in Burma which lessened the usual demand for other Chinese products-farm produce for the most part. Despite the meagreness in the export trade, imports did considerably better than in the previous year, increasing in value from 1.7 to 3.3 million Haikwan taels. The principal import items of the district are raw cotton, cotton yarn, and cotton piece goods. For trade on such a small scale as that of Tengyueh, the introduction of the Chinese Consular Invoice system proved to be rather a handicap, since the fees for invoices represent quite a large percentage of the value of the consignments. The question of building a road to enable vehicular traffic to supplant the slow and expensive mule trains in carrying the Sino-Burmese trade across the frontier has been raised, but funds for such enterprises in this far- western part of the province do not appear to be forthcoming at present.
