SAMSHUI

A505

A telegraph service is maintained from Sainam. A nice building for the Post Office, situated alongside the road leading from the railway-station to the stone jetty, was completed and opened to the public on September 9th, 1921. There are no Consulates established; the Consuls within whose districts Samshui lies reside either in Canton or Hongkong.

TRADE IN 1932.

4

The trade conditions at Samshui in 1932 were on the whole discouraging. The anti-Japanese boycott, which gathered in strength and put a stop to practically all importation of goods of Japanese origin, was one of the main factors contributing to the trade depression. Besides, since April, this year, the local money market had been rendered exceedingly stringent following the continued closures of several prominent native banks at Canton with which most of the native banks in and around this district had wide dealings. Since then failures of native banks in Sainam, Shiuhing and elsewhere on the West River were reported, with the result that all branches of business had to be transacted on a cash basis, thereby curtailing trade to no small extent. In June and August, this port was visited by floods with water levels attaining to 23' 6" and 22' 10" above zero respectively. Though they were not so serious as those of previous years, yet the rice crops of the low-lying fields which had been kept long under water, were entirely ruined. The total values of imports from and exports to abroad coming under the cognizance of the Customs during 1932 were G.U. 3,008,000 and Hk. Tls. 584,000 respectively as compared with G.U. 3,072,000 for imports and Hk. Tls. 873,000 for exports in 1931.
