CHANGSHA

BEANS.

For the third year in succession this article proved a failure. The quality of the crop was passable, and the 'quantity was the largest for thirty years, but prices locally ruled very high owing to big demand by native vermicelli factories, and little cargo was exported.

WOODOIL.

Only a small traffic was done from Kiyang/Hengchow and supplies must have been diverted into other channels. It is reported that in Southern Hunan Woodoil is now being used locally in place of the much more expensive kerosene.

ANTIMONY.

In the early part of the year business in regulus was brisk, but later the demand fell off and Changsha once again featured mainly as a gambling centre. Prices ranged between $180 a ton (April) and $290 (December). Production during 1932 was approximately 12,000 tons, of which 10,218 tons were exported. Crude: 1592 tons were exported, prices fluctuating between $150-90-150. White Antimony Oxide: Pro- duction was about 110 tons per month, which is on the high side. Prices fluctuated between $190-260.

ORES.

Lead. The total production of the Shui Kou Shan mine about 400 tons a month- was absorbed by the Government owned Hunan Lead Smelting Works, and none was exported. New deposits are being sought, but progress is hampered by lack of funds.

Zinc. The mine produced approximately 400 tons Rock and 600 tons Sands a month, but only 8000 tons Sands were sold, owing to low price in Europe. The Hunan Provincial Government has huge stocks on hand, and is endeavouring to raise

loan for the erection of a Zinc Smelting Plant at Changsha.

Tungsten. Production and demand were small, approximately 170 tons pro- duced and 150 tons sold, price varying from $400-300 a ton.

ENGINEERING.

The Hunan Light and power Company installed a 2000 K.W.A. turbine delivered by the Sintoon Trading Company of Changsha.

AVIATION.

Messrs. L. E. Gale & Co. of Hankow sold 2 RYAN planes to the Hunan Aviation

Bureau.
