on the mainland of the Peninsula, a system of cart and bridle roads extends to the boundaries of Perak, Negri Sembilan and Pahang. Branch lines of railway now extend in all directions, and the main trunk line passes through Selangor. Port Swettenham is the terminus of the railway on Klang Straits, and wharves have been constructed there capable of accommodating ocean-going steamers.

The numbers and tonnage of merchant vessels above 50 tons net register entered and cleared at Port Swettenham during the year 1930, were 3,046 vessels and 6,627,498 tons as compared with 3,250 vessels and 6,412,825 tons in 1929, being an increase of 214,673 tons.

The numbers and tonnage of ocean-going steamers entered and cleared at this port were 1,484 vessels and 5,902,056 tons in 1930, as compared with 1,431 vessels and 5,623,425 tons in 1929, being an increase of 278,631 tons. The number of ocean-going steamers which came alongside the wharf was 333 as against 365 in the previous year. The largest vessel entering the port was s.s. Achilles (British) of 11,426 tons. The deepest draft vessel entering the port was s.s. Philoctetis (British) drawing 31ft. 6ins. of water.

Telegraph lines connect Selangor with the other States in the Malay Peninsula; telephones are established throughout the State, and postal and telegraph offices are to be found in all the towns and principal villages.

The State revenue in 1930 amounted to $25,175,349, against $32,552,527 in 1929; and the expenditure to $31,315,154, against $32,212,697 in 1929. On the first January, 1931, the assets of the State were $30,079,418 and its liabilities $514,890. Trade statistics were as follows:-
