SAMSHUI
A telegraph service is maintained from Sainam. A nice building for the Post Office, situated alongside the road leading from the railway-station to the stone jetty, was completed and opened to the public on September 9th, 1921. There are no Consulates established; the Consuls within whose districts Samshui lies reside either in Canton or Hongkong.
TRADE IN 1930
Trade in 1930 at Samshui was adversely affected by the fighting between the two- Kwang forces and to a great extent by the heavy fall in the price of silver. Moreover there was a recrudescence of piratical activity along the West River below Samshui. Steamers to and from Hongkong were frequently fired on from the shore. However, the Samshui-Wuchow section of the river was immune from piracy, due to the frequent movements of troops and the patrolling of gunboats. The number of steamers on the Hongkong-Wuchow run was more than enough to cope with the volume of trade. During the first half pear of 1930 the freight war was acute, causing serious losses to all parties concerned. This competition was eventually brought to a happy end in August when all the shipping firms came to an agreement to form a shipping "pool" which resulted in a uniform freight rate being charged. Just at this time a tramp steamer under the Portuguese flag came into the field and she was greatly patronized by merchants owing to the fact that cheaper rates than the "pool" were charged. The pool" has had since to compete with two new competitors under the Chinese flag which appeared in the field in March and June, 1931. The cassia trade continued to show considerable activity in 1930. The port was visited by two floods during 1930. The greater portion of the projected road between Sainshui and Lupao, 50 li in length, was roughly completed during 1930. The construction of a road along the dike from Samshui to Sainam which has been talked of ever since 1929 has not yet been taken in hand.
The net value of the trade coming under the cognisance of the Customs during 1930 was Hk. Tls. 5,180,489, as compared with Hk. Tls. 6,148,331 in 1929, Hk. Tls. 7,586,227 in 1928, Hk. Tls. 5,462,065 in 1927, and Hk. Tls. 1,890,280 in 1926.
