artificial silk and cotton piece goods, the demand for which has been steadily increasing during the last few years, showed a very marked falling off, and imports amounted to but one-fifth of the previous year's total. Speculative importations of wheat flour from abroad, which commenced in the autumn of 1929, resulted in an accumulation of stocks in Dairen. This was further accentuated by a decreased demand from the interior consequent on large supplies from North Manchuria being placed on the markets usually fed by Dairen, and importations from abroad were roughly only half the preceding figures. The bean crop was abundant, but, owing to the low prices prevailing, farmers were unwilling to sell, and consequently there was little movement from the interior to the railway zone. Exports abroad of beancake were dull, but the briskness in coastwise shipments proved some compensation, and the total for the year showed no great difference in comparison with the 1929 figures. Local oil mills benefited by the low price of beans during the first half of the year, but later a decrease in the price of oil resulted in an unfavourable reaction. Owing to better harvests in other parts of China, coastwise move. ments of kaoliang a heavy decrease. Shipments of coal to Chinese ports 1e- mained steady, but, due chiefly to the failing demand from Japan, exports abroad proved disappointing. Effective measures were adopted early in the year by the Japanese police in the Leased Territory to stamp out smuggling across the frontier. The South Manchuria Railway coal pier at Kanchingize, on the north shore of the harbour, on which work had been in progress since August 1928, was completed in November, 1930. A mechanical loading system is in operation, and the capacity is said to be about 4 million tons per annuin. The chicf features are a breakwater 900 metres in length; a coal pier, at which four vessels with a gross tonnage of from 7,000 to 10,000 tons can be accommodated at the same time, two on either side; railway sidings, with a total length of 32 kilometres; and a coal yard, with a storage capacity of 300,000 tons.
