CIVIL AVIATION

The civil airlines, which are run by the Royal Netherland Indian Airlines Com- pany (K.N.I.L.M.) form a highly appreciated and valuable supplement to the existing older means of transport. The following lines are now in regular exploitation.

Batavia-Semarang-Sourabaya, vice-versa (more or less 670 km. daily) Batavia-Bandoung, vice-versa (more or less 110 km. bidaily) Batavia-Palembang, vice-versa (more or less 585 km. weekly)

Batavia-Palembang-Singapore, vice-versa (more or less 1,135 km. weekly) Batavia-Palembang-Pakan-Baru-Medan, vice-versa (more or less 1,500 km.weekly)

The average monthly traffic exceeds now over 1,000 passengers, 12,000 kg. of freight and 750 kg. mail.

Moreover the Company does other aerial work, e.g., taxi-flying, joy-riding, photo- graphy, dusting, etc.

3-Engined Fokker monoplanes are in usc.

In September 1930 the trial flights of the Royal Dutch Airlines Company (K.L.M.) the Hague, started again. If no unexpected difficulties arise, these trial flights will develop into a regular fortnightly service between Holland and Java in the beginning of 1931, in consequence whereof the transport of airmail between the two parts of the Kingdom will only take about 12 days instead of about 25 days by ordinary mail.
