the large amount of land taken up by Japanese. In 1928, 576,990 piculs of copra. valued at $6,225,927, and 183,891 piculs of areca-nuts, valued at $1,199,915, were exported.

Johore is rich in iron ore, and a mine is being successfully worked by Japanese in Batu Pahat and 584,588 tons of the ore were exported in 1928. The first valuable discoveries of tin were made in the valley of Jenialuang, a small river flowing into the China Sea near Mersing, and there are indications of the presence of tin ore that may be worked at a profit at various places between Jemaluang and the Sedili. The export of tin ore in 1928 amounted to 18,424 piculs. The value of exported minerals was $4,715,957 in 1928, as against $4,419,181 in 1927.
