DAIREN
An electric tramway runs alon the principal streets and out by the suburban line to Shahokou, (where the South Manchuria Railway workshops are established, over four miles westward from Dairen), and extends two miles farther to Hoshigaura (Star Beach), the finest watering place in Manchuria. There is an excellent hotel here manag- ed by the South Manchuria Railway Company, and also a number of bungalows which may be hired by visitors. The town of Dairen is lighted by electricity and gas and has ample telephone facilities. The electric power-house, which was completed in 1911, has a capacity of 4,500 kilowatts. The town has macadamized roads lined with rows of shady trees, and is well equipped with waterworks, drainage and sewage systems. With the growth of trade, more particularly in Manchurian beans, a number of influential business houses, Japanese, Chinese and foreign, have established them- selves at the port. The foreign and Japanese communities in April, 1909, organized and opened the Dairen Club. A Gun Club, Golf Club, and Marine Association are among the other institutions of the port. Of places for public amusement, the so-called Electric Park, designed on an up-to-date plan and containing all devices for recreation, forms the chief attraction. The Chinese quarter, situated on the western fringe of the city, has also grown considerably. There is a Railway Hospital equipped with every modern appointment and affording accommodation for 200 patients. It is ably conducted by a staff of medical officers. A new hospital is now in course of erec- tion which will be one of the finest and most up-to-date hospitals in the Far East.
A direct steamship service is maintained twice a week by the South Manchuria Railway Company between Dairen and Shanghai, one outward bound steamer and one homeward bound steamer calling at Tsingtao each week, by which means communication is obtained between Shanghai and the trans-Siberian Route to Europe, Regular steamship services are maintained to and from all the important ports of Japan, China and Chosen (Korea). Shanghai can be reached in 42 hours, Chiemulpo in 24 hours, and Moji and Nagasaki in about 50 hours.
For 1916, the trade of Dairen (imports and exports) amounted to Tls. 119,071,713, viz., Imports Hk. Tls. 53,892,079, and Exports Hk. Tls. 65,179,634. According to the census taken in Aug. 1917, the Japanese population of the town and suburbs was 44,533 in 11,071 houses. Chinese numbered 51,257 in 7,975 houses, and other nationals totalled 75 in 29 houses.
